San Antonio Named Among
20 Best Cities to
Live and Work for
Moviemakers for Second Consecutive Year
ANTONIO (Jan. 31, 2020) – MovieMaker Magazine announced today it selected
San Antonio as one of its top 20 big cities to “Live and Work as a Moviemaker
in 2020.” This is the second consecutive year San Antonio makes the list.
MovieMaker determined the winners using surveys,
editorial research on tax incentives and recent productions, and personal
visits to most of the locations on the list. The full list of winning cities
and towns is below.
"We’ve been impressed with San Antonio’s continued commitment to
being a city friendly to moviemakers,” said MovieMaker Editor-in-Chief
Tim Molloy. “It often takes a village to make a movie and San Antonio has
demonstrated that its entire community – from traditional film resources to the
buy-in of businesses and government – creates a foundation for moviemakers to keep building on.”
The San Antonio
Film Commission, a division of the Department of Arts & Culture, provides
initial location scouting, film permitting and liaison services. San Antonio offers
the strongest film incentive of all Texas cities with its local film rebate of
7.5 percent. The incentive is friendly to most budgets and projects with a
$100,000 minimum expenditure to receive the incentive and can also be paired
with the State of Texas film rebate of up to 22.5 percent.
“We were not
surprised to hear of San Antonio’s inclusion in MovieMaker’s list,” said
Edwin Licona, Producer of the HBO Latino comedy special, “Entre Nos”. “The city
truly opened its arms to our production with experienced and friendly crew and
locations, enthusiastic audience members, and an easy-to-work-with Film
Commission. All of these factors made our experience in San Antonio enjoyable
just as much as productive.”
recognition comes as the San Antonio Film Commission enters year four of its
five-year strategic plan to ensure San Antonio is one of the top film-friendly
cities in the nation. Contributing to San Antonio’s film-friendly status, the
Film Commission assisted many productions in 2019 including shows on Lifetime,
PBS, Travel Channel, HGTV, Univision and HBO as well as commercials and films –
including short films as part of the commission’s Local Filmmaker Grant program
that provides local filmmakers $5,000 grants for their projects.
the immediate horizon, the Film Commission will market San Antonio to film
professionals attending SXSW, launch its 2020 #FilmSA Contest in partnership
with the City of San Antonio’s World Heritage Office and offer a Film
Commission 101 workshop.
